Any tips for coloring a drawing with photoshop?
Any tips or ideas that you have are very much appreciated! Thank you! 
I use a hard edged brush and select "hue" on the brush's options. This option allows you to add color, without coloring over the black lines or dots.
And yes, I agree with the idea of getting a graphics tablet, at some point. It is very fast to learn and makes a LOT of work easier. Still, it can still be done with a mouse, just a lot more carefully.
I do recommend you first make a working copy of the original file.

You should buy a WACOM tablet. These tablets come with digital pens. You can draw on the tablets and the content is inputted on your computer. You can see the results of your coloring live on your monitor.
I suggest you buy the WACOM Intuos. These tablets have better functionality and longer reliability than WACOM Graphire. Graphire tablets are cheaper. Intuos tablets are pretty expensive. Newegg.com sells these. The largest one, a 9 x 12 tablet costs $405.99.

I want to buy these tablets. I am saving up more money. I think these will make your life much easier. Trust me, spending hours and hours coloring and or drawing with your mouse can become tedious. I have lived with working with a mouse for ten years. But I think I should move on.
I want to suggest some reviews on WACOM Intuos. You should make your choice on what pro reviewers have to say.

Try finding photoshop tutorials online like at deviantart.com and try using those to help you become more accustomed to photoshop and just practice and you'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

It is easier to use a waacom tablet, but you can use a mouse if that's the tool that you have, and still get great results.
